“When we visit Camp [Blodgett] in the summer and see the joy and excitement in those children who otherwise would not have this opportunity – it really puts things into perspective,” said Steven Herrygers, director of project engineering at Consumers Energy.
Steven Herrygers has been volunteering at Camp Blodgett since 2014, but his family’s involvement goes back decades. “My grandmother worked in the kitchen in the ‘60s and ‘70s and all of my dad’s siblings and most of my cousins have worked there,” he said. So when Herrygers found himself one mile from the camp after relocating back to Michigan in 2011, he reached out to the operations director to see how he could help.
“It started with an offer to mow the lawn, but with my management experience they asked if I would be interested in being on the board,” he said. During his 3-year term as the president of the board of directors, Herrygers worked closely with the executive director and the board to provide guidance on strategic planning, fundraising, networking, volunteerism and community involvement. “During the school year we host after school clubs and leadership programs,” said Herrygers. “In the summer we host week-long overnight camps and a four-week summer academy at our gorgeous camp property on the shores of Lake Michigan. “
Volunteering has made a positive difference in Herrygers’ life. Since his term ended in 2016, he has continued to assist with fundraising activities and site maintenance.“There are so many organizations and individuals that can significantly benefit from a small portion of our time. It is very rewarding to serve our community in unique ways,” he said.
Camp Blodgett is a nonprofit organization offering year-round programs for campers ages 8 to 13 who live or attend a school in Kent or Ottawa Counties. The cost is dependent on family size and income; for as low as $40, kids can enjoy the week-long camp experience. Visit campblodgett.org for more information.
