We value all of our employees, including our veterans, who make up about nine percent of our workforce. We appreciate the work they do and the value they add to our company and community.
As we recognize Armed Forces Day on May 20, it’s important to realize Veterans have not always been welcomed with open arms. Mike Moll, Corporate Security Manager and Veterans’ Advisory Panel member, recalls a much different time:
“I have a special affinity for Vietnam Veterans — back when I was a young, punk 19-year-old, I joined the Michigan Air National Guard as a Security Police Officer for “books and beer money” for college. Shortly after graduating from Basic Training and Tech School, my unit was deployed to serve in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. All of my NCOs (Non-Commissioned Officers) and Senior NCOs were Vietnam Vets. They took that 19-year-old punk kid under their wing and made sure he did things right.
I also recall their stories about coming home to an America that was war-weary and didn’t support them or their service – stories of being told to take their uniforms off at their last stop overseas before coming into a U.S. airport because they would be spit on, cursed at and treated so unjustly. When we came back from the desert, it was a much different situation – there were parades, proclamations and positive news stories. This helped to heal some of the wounds they experienced from Vietnam.
I appreciate working for a company who sees our value and not only hires veterans but is actively recruiting and training them.”
Our efforts to take care of our veteran employees and recruit new veterans are being noticed. We have received several recent recognitions and awards for our support of veterans and commitment to diversity:
- Received A Mid-Michigan 2017 American Advertising Award (Addy Award) for our Bridging the Gap video, which dispels many of the stereotypes associated with veterans.
- Named a Gold Status Veteran Friendly Employer by the Michigan Veteran’s Affairs Agency for our dedication to recruiting and retaining military veterans.
- Included in the Best for Vets: Employers 2017 rankings by the Military Times, recognizing our commitment to providing opportunities to America’s veterans.
- Ranked one of DiversityInc’s 2017 Top Companies for Diversity recognizing the nation’s top companies for diversity and inclusion management, excelling in areas including hiring, retaining and promoting women, minorities, people with disabilities, LGBT and veterans.
