In some cases a disability can be obvious, but many are invisible. In all cases, individuals with disabilities are capable of great things.
In honor of National Disability Employment Awareness month, Consumers Energy is excited to introduce CapABLE, a new Employee Resource Group (ERG). CapABLE removes barriers, opens minds and creates pathways to meaningful work for current and future employees of ALL abilities. We do this by promoting accessibility, accommodations and work/life flexibility, furthering our success as a company without boundaries.
“There are several regulations and laws protecting employees from disability discrimination,” said Angela Thompkins, Inclusion and Diversity Director. “But we wanted to go beyond that. It isn’t just about the law; it’s about offering support to our employees with disabilities or those who might have a family member with a disability.”
“We aren’t focused on the disabilities, we are focused on ALL abilities of our employees and we are committed to a future as a company without boundaries,” said Thompkins.
CapABLE’s inaugural event for employees will take place Oct. 28 at One Energy Plaza in Jackson. The event will feature athletes from the Special Olympics of Michigan. The group will be focused on recruitment, accommodations, safety, self-identification and what it means to have a disability.
