Each year, we celebrate Earth Day on April 22 to highlight the importance of building a healthy, sustainable planet. You can help by taking steps to green your business. Here are five ways to get started:
1. Sign up for eBill
Reduce your carbon footprint by going paperless. Login to enroll in Consumers Energy eBill.
2. Reduce waste
Start a recycling program with bins for paper, plastic and other materials your employees use on a daily basis.
3. Upgrade your lighting
LED bulbs use 70-90 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs. Click to view rebates and incentives on lighting.
4. Buy green
Source goods and materials produced locally and sustainably. Make sure the things you buy are:
- Free of toxic materials or ozone-depleting substances
- Recycled or produced from recycled materials
- Packaged using biodegradable and/or sustainable materials
- Designed to be reusable and not “throwaway”
5. Plant for the future
Planting trees on your property is not only good for the planet, it can enhance the visual appeal of your business and reduce your energy bills. Leafy trees on the south and east side of your building provide cooling shade in the summer, while evergreens on the north and northwest side will shield you from cold winter winds.
