When I reflect on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I see it as a day to promote equal rights for all people, regardless of their background and to celebrate a very influential civil rights leader.

Similarly, Consumers Energy’s diversity efforts are encouraging people to “bring their whole self to work”. It is important, as MLK said, for all people to be treated with respect and valued for the uniqueness that each person brings with them.

In 2015, Consumers Energy will concentrate our diversity efforts on inclusion which is ensuring that no one feels left out because of their:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Race
  • Nationality
  • Religion or belief
  • Sexual orientation
  • Physical or mental disabilities
  • Social background

This is a day to celebrate the legacy, hope and inspiration that Martin Luther King, Jr. left behind for us to reflect on as we strive to create our own legacy.

Pamela Bolden is the Diversity & Inclusion Director at Consumers Energy. She enjoys bowling, attending church and reading. Pam’s favorite Martin Luther King, Jr. quote is, “The time is always right to do what is right.”
