Beware of Energy Vampires!

Did you know, more than likely there is a vampire or two lurking in your home? They don’t have two fangs, capes or an appetite for blood. Instead, these vampires have two prongs, wires and an appetite for energy. Don’t be alarmed and don’t pull out the garlic to fend them off! Take the few tips below, apply them to your own home and share with your friends and family in order to band together and ward off energy vampires!

Potential energy vampires include:

  • phone chargers
  • T.Vs
  • DVD players
  • printers
  • laptop computers
  • desktop computers

1) Use a power strip – Using a power strip allows for you to have one true and central “off” button for all of your appliances and electronics.

2) Unplug – Even when not in use or connected, but still plugged in, chargers are drawing energy! So, when your phone is done charging, make sure you unplug the charger from the wall.  Likewise, if you are going on vacation or have rarely used appliances in your home, consider unplugging them while they are not in use. Even when not in use or connected, but still plugged in, chargers are drawing energy!

3) Buy Energy Star – While you can’t unplug everything in your home because it is neither practical nor realistic, you can consider purchasing energy star appliances when it comes time to replace. Energy Star appliances have a much smaller “vampire load.”  Another great thing about Energy Star? You can get a rebate! Check out the Energy Efficiency website to learn more.
